For a first skippered week in Croatia, late May to mid-June and the whole of September are the months to aim for: the sea is warm enough to swim, marinas still have berths in the afternoon, and charter prices sit well below the July and August peak.
April and October
These are the shoulder months. Days are shorter and some island restaurants have not opened or have already closed, but the sailing itself can be excellent and the anchorages are quiet. Expect cooler evenings and pack a proper layer.
July and August
These are the busiest months on the Adriatic. Popular harbours such as Hvar town fill early in the day, and you will pay the highest weekly rate of the year. If school holidays fix your dates, book early and plan to arrive at each harbour by early afternoon.
Winter: November to March
Winter is not a holiday season for first-timers. Many charter bases run a reduced fleet, the bora wind can blow hard for days, and most of the coastal towns are shut.
Choosing your month
If this is your first charter, read the complete first-timer guide before you pick a week, then choose the month that matches what you want most: warm water, quiet anchorages, or the lowest price.
Choose June or September if you can, accept July and August only if you must, and treat the shoulder months as a bonus for those who do not mind a jumper on deck.
